Mark Colaw, the owner of Seymours Garage and founder of DPFR in San Antonio, Texas, developed a new way to clean Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) for medium-duty diesel trucks.
The diesel industry has not had an effective and simple way to clean DPF’s. Although every diesel engine has one, the only solutions currently available are costly and time-consuming.
Medium Duty Truck owners have two options when their DPF gets dirty: either replace the DPF at a considerable expense (Generally $4,000+) or pull the DPF off the truck and cut it open for a multi-day cleaning process.
The DPF in a medium-duty diesel pickup truck typically needs to be replaced or serviced around 100-150k miles but will begin to negatively affect engine performance around 30-50K miles. However, this can vary widely depending on the vehicle's usage, maintenance practices, and driving habits. Trucks that are used primarily for short trips or idle for extended periods will have a much shorter DPF lifespan. When an engine is not performing well, it will rapidly clog the DPF. This is why diesel engine diagnostics and repair often require DPF replacement or cleaning, even on low-mileage vehicles.
In 2016 Mark began designing a solution to this problem. After years of testing and iteration, he developed the ReGenX cleaning method. Instead of removing the DPF from the vehicle, the machine he designed can be inserted into the exhaust pipe through a small hole and can clean the DPF in 2-3 hours. The machine creates a clean, high-heat flame that burns particulate matter off the DPF substrate.
The Particulate matter that clogs DPFs will burn at a high enough temperature when exposed for a long enough period of time. However, for many reasons, trucks often cannot create enough heat to burn the soot, which causes the DPF to clog. The ReGenX cleaning method quickly reaches the needed temperature and can easily burn the soot that the truck's regeneration process cannot.
This method has been tested on hundreds of vehicles and consistently resolves dirty DPF-related issues. DPFR is now partnering with local shops to make this fast and cost-effective solution available to select shop owners in the San Antonio area.
This solution resolves several critical problems in the medium-duty diesel repair industry. First, it is significantly less expensive than replacing or cleaning a dirty DPF. Second current cleaning methods require shop owners to tie up a bay for 2-3 days while a DPF is cleaned and then still have to charge vehicle owners thousands of dollars for labor and cleaning. Lastly, it allows shop owners to quickly clean a DPF while on the truck so that they can properly diagnose upstream problem.
ReGenX is also a maintenance tool for extending the life of a DPF and preserving the performance of the truck. DPFR plans to offer the machines to shop owners so they can have an in-house DPF maintenance and cleaning solution. When diesel owners bring their truck in for service, they will have the option of getting their DPF cleaned while the truck is on the lift.
Here is an overview of the ReGenX cleaning process. The tech starts by drilling a hole in the exhaust pipe just above the DPF. The substrate is then examined with a camera to ensure it is not damaged. Next the ReGenX wand is inserted into the pipe and mounted with a special bracket. The tech then chooses the settings for the make and model of the truck to ensure the optimal burn for the that type of DPF. Once the ReGenX begins working, the tech can monitor the temperature periodically for 2-3 hours. When the ReGenX has completed it’s cleaning cycle, the temperature inside the DPF will drop, signaling that the DPF is clean. Finally, the tech will ensure the computer is reset to the newly cleaned DPF before the customer picks up their vehicle.
ReGenX represents a groundbreaking advancement in the diesel industry. This innovative approach addresses the longstanding challenges of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning and maintenance by offering a cost-effective, efficient, and practical solution for medium-duty diesel trucks. By eliminating the need for costly replacements or lengthy cleaning processes, ReGenX not only saves truck owners time and money but also enables repair shops to diagnose engine issues more accurately and maintain DPFs more effectively. As DPFR continues to refine this technology and expand its availability, it stands to revolutionize the medium-duty diesel industry, extending the lifespan of DPFs, enhancing overall vehicle performance, and extending engine lifespan.
